Happy New Year from Modern Martha Stewart and family!

I want to first thank you for being apart of the Stilettos & Sippy Cups community. We hope to have more growth and interaction in the new year and we look forward to getting to know you SASY Moms even more!

And speaking of being a SASY mom … it’s a New Year, sooooo, NEW PHOTO SHOOT!! My buddy Stuart Townsley, the owner of Townsley Portraits, just photographed us for our new family photos and they are everythinggg! But before I show you the awesome pics, I asked Stuart to give you mommies a few tips for taking photos with little ones. I have to admit, #CharlieB doesn’t always love the camera, but Stuart’s top 5 tips really helped during our shoot.

Step-for-Step … is Pediped the Best?

There are TONS of adorable shoes available for little girls. No seriously, have you seen the selection out there?! There’s no shortage of super cute kicks for your tiny tots. But, how many of them can claim to be comfortable and good quality, too? Not many that I know of and that’s why I’m officially a big fan of Pediped.

#CharlieB got her first pair of Pedipeds just a short while ago and she and I are already in love. The footwear company prides itself on “comfort, quality, and style—in that order” and that’s evident from the first time CB step foot in hers. I’ll be honest, Charlie isn’t the biggest fan of shoes, socks or anything on her feet for that matter. She loves to look at shoes, but they typically don’t stay on long … however, the “Grip ‘n’ Go” shoe in the “Henry” style (pictured above) stayed on almost all day. That’s a big deal in the Barnett household! On top of that, the shoe was super cute and had a sturdy sole for my little clumsy toddler, LOL!

image1

Pediped shoes promote healthy foot development by offering footwear for every stage of growth. There’s the “Original” for infants and little ones learning to walk. There’s the “Grip ‘n’ Go” style for active toddlers transitioning into confident walkers (Charlie B’s current phase). And there’s the “Flex” for those with a solid stride. The selection of styles for each type of shoe is almost endless — there are dress shoes and sandals for girls, sneakers and boots for boys and everything in between. I think the only thing they’re missing are moccasins … oh please, Pediped make some moccasins!!

All in all, Pediped has a fan in me and most importantly, in #Charlie B. To learn more about this awesome company, their innovative technology and the husband and wife team that created it, go to www.Pediped.com and tell them I sent you 🙂

Bonus Note: Their customer service is second to none! The Pediped team helped me find the perfect shoe for #CharlieB and even when I made a blunder in ordering, they rectified it immediately and with a smile. That means A LOT to a mom like me!

SASY Moms

Jordan Tesfay

Meet SASY mom, Jordan Tesfay — Actually, you probably already now this mommy model! She broke down barriers as CoverGirl’s first plus size CoverGirl Model, but this newlymom (kinda like newlywed, get it?!) isn’t resting on her laurels. With an 11 month old daughter and numerous professional endeavors, Tesfay truly is the epitome of a SASY mom. Find out more about her in our Q&A below.

S&S: What do you think makes you a SASY Mom?
JT: Like many new moms, I learned to juggle baby, career and household responsibilities without a manual. All the while, managing to apply makeup, do my hair and workout; so that I looked and felt good about myself.

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 12.28.51 PM

S&S: Not only are you a SASY mom, but you’re a history-making model as well! What does it mean to you to be the first plus size CoverGirl?
JT: Covergirl is an iconic American brand that most models dream of representing, because plus size models are often are not afforded the same opportunities as their slender counterparts. I was honored and humbled at the chance of making history, as the first plus model ever to appear in a beauty campaign for Covergirl.

S&S: Curvy seems to be very “in” right now … As a mother to a young girl what do you hope to teach your daughter, Zarah about body image?
JT: My daughter has a very bright and wonderful spirit. I hope that I can teach her to never lose sight of the voice within her. That voice that will guide, protect and honor her so she has the confidence to look within rather than externally for role models.

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 12.26.11 PM

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 12.44.25 PM

S&S: For many years it seemed as though modeling and motherhood couldn’t mix, but now we see lots of models having babies and even bringing them to set. Has the modeling industry become more accepting of mothers or is it still a stigma within the industry (behind closed doors)?
JT: No, I wouldn’t say there is a stigma in the industry. Except that the challenge is often how quickly your body can bounce back after having the baby. The faster you bounce back, the more your celebrated. So perhaps there does exist a stigma, if a woman does not bounce back quickly after giving birth.

S&S: You’re in fantastic shape! Was it tough “bouncing back” after giving birth? What was/is your fitness regimen?
JT: Thanks! As your readers know, new moms especially, have to squeeze exercise in when they can. Early morning Yoga via youtube, while I watch my little one, and power walking are my favorite ways to stay in shape. I also try to be mindful of my diet. I support my fitness regimen with a healthy diet, balancing complex carbs with proteins and using my Nutribullet for healthy juices.

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 12.25.52 PM

S&S: In addition to mommy and model, you are also a lawyer and entrepreneur! Can you tell us about your other endeavors and how you’re able to juggle everything?
JT: Through Gods grace and family, I happily manage to juggle it all. I enjoy organizing and planning ahead, daily, weekly, yearly and long term goal writing is something that I do regularly. Writing my goals and activities down helps me to organize and compartmentalize my thoughts. Once I write it down, I stop worrying about whatever the task is and just check it off once it’s completed. Also, I take time to
pamper myself. Simply things like a bath with my favorite oil or an at home manicure, help to refresh my mind and spirit.

S&S: And since we’re StilettosAndSippyCups.com, we have to ask…what is your favorite pair of stilettos to rock on the catwalk?!
JT: My Kate Spade Patent Nude Pumps. Love them!

SASY Moms

Dominique Penn

Who runs the world? GIRLS Dominique Penn! Being a mommy of two little boys is already a handful, but this gorgeous momnpreneur also has a bun in the oven, a successful boutique and children’s book series, plus she fully supports her husbands who spends a lot of time on the road due to his job in the NFL … needless to say, Mrs. Penn is one busy lady. But, she took some time out of her hectic schedule to chat with Stilettos & Sippy Cups and give some advice on being organized and following your dreams, plus she gave some insight on being a “football wife” (hint: it’s not what you think!).

S&S: You are the mother of two boys with a little princess on the way!  How do you think raising a girl will be different than raising your boys?  Are your two little ones ready for a baby sister?!

DP: Raising a girl will be totally different from raising my boys. At least, I hope so lol. I am expecting to buy dolls and princess items, opposed to monsters and cars all the time. It will be refreshing to buy pink and purple head-bands and tutus instead of basketball shorts and tennis shoes.

unnamed-3

DP: My two little ones Donald & Dominick are ready for a baby sister! Especially my oldest, he wants his sister to make chocolate chip cookies for him and watch movies with him. My youngest, Dominick, still doesn’t quite get it yet, but he pulls my stomach to his face all the time and kisses my navel! He knows something is in there lol. It truly is the sweetest thing ever.

You created a blog and baby boutique called “Everything Mrs. Penn Loves”!  Tell us about your brand?  Also, you’re an author too!  Tell us about your children’s book series.

My brand is about “Everything” that I love, from items in target, to family, to different products and more. I built “Everything Mrs. Penn Loves” to share my life with the world and to engage/inform other moms with items that I may see that I like or items that I may carry in my store.

My children’s book series is what I am the most proud of! I created the series to express the love between my eldest son, Donald , and his life adventures while captivating the love between friends and family! I have a total of 10 books in the series with the first three that released this year!! The Many Adventures of Donald series has been truly one of my favorite projects of all!

unnamed-4

What does Mrs. Penn absolutely LOVE about being a mompreneur?

I absolutely love that this is  my “OUT”! A lot of times when you are a stay at home mom, with the kids, day in and day out, you can easily lose yourself. This gives me my “OUT” and it makes me feel good to do something that I love, for myself.

unnamed-2

Your husband is a NFL player and has to travel a lot with his team, how do you manage raising the kids, taking care of home and running a business when he’s gone so often?

I manage everything with a book organizer, my iphone, and a great support system. While building my businesses, my family comes first. If they need me, I’m there and I don’t let any business get in the way of that and its been working thus far, #Family1st.

What is the most common misconception about “football wives”?

There’s a lot of misconceptions about “football wives” or “wives” in general. I think the biggest one is that were all complacent in where we are in life and our lives are so easy. I have met a lot of women that are dedicated to the their families , who want to become “mompreneurs”. Women that want to branch out and start their own thing but at the same time they understand what it takes to hold down the household . I’ve met successful women that have foundations and businesses that are making names for themselves that you will never hear about because we aren’t “famous”. So I think that’s  one of the biggest misconception of all.

In addition, a lot of people think our lives are  “easy” because we have “money” as if money is the solution to all of our problems. I know I can speak for many wives/ fiancées/ gfs out there that there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. When our men are in pain, tired, or missing childbirths, Christmas holiday parties or school recitals, money cant replace those moments.

unnamed-6

And since we’re StilettosAndSippyCups.com, we have to ask…what is your favorite pair of stilettos?!

My favorite pair of stilettos are my Versace “Signature Medusa High Heel Sandals” in black! They are so stylish and comfortable to wear!! They are truly my all time favorites!!

Holiday Must Have: Tons Of Fun With Foodstirs Kit!

There are few things in the world that scream “the holidays are here” like fresh baked gingerbread cookies and when they’re homemade it’s even better! Luckily, Foodstirs cooking kits makes baking at home easy and fun for the whole family — believe me, I know firsthand!

#CharlieB, Grammy and I had a great time making “Gingerbread People” with our Foodstirs kit. Literally, almost everything you need comes in the box … flour, sugar, jelly beans, cookie cutter … seriously, they make it SO easy!

Mixing it up! We have all the ingredients...

And even though CB is only 18 months, she was able to help out and have lots fun doing it. She helped pour ingredients into the bowl, mixing the batter with her little hands and decorate cookies (really, she just ate the organic jellybeans and chocolate covered sunflower seeds LOL!).

Just look how happy #CharlieB is :)

The various kits (Gingerbread People, Dreidel cookie, Brownie Popsicle and more) are reasonably priced, easy to order and make about 10-12 cookies … oh, and did I mention they’re delicious?! Check out Foodstirs.com for more info and take a look at our step-by-step photos below!

Why ‘Grinchmas’ Is The Best Way To Celebrate The Holiday!

Let me tell you, “Grinchmas” is definitely fun for the whole family!

We took #CharlieB to the “Grinchmas” Who-liday kick-off held at Universal Studios Hollywood Thursday night, and although she’s only 18 months old, she had a blast! There was a tree lighting, songs & dances, fireworks, snow (well, the fake stuff lol), plenty of activities for all ages and of course, the Grinch and his Whoville peeps, including Mayor Garcetti and actors Alexa PenaVega, Carlos PenaVega and Yvette Nicole Brown.

LA Mayor Garcetti, Maya Garcetti, Max, The Grinch, Alexa PenaVega, Carlos PenaVega and Yvette Nicole Brown

· Who-ville Post Office – Visitors will have a chance to partake in the “Grow Your Hearts 3 Sizes” campaign when they share their good deeds on a postcard and mail them to The Grinch. In return, Random House Children’s Books, the publishers of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, will pay it forward by donating a book to a child in need through First Book on behalf of the sender.

· Trim up the Tree Lot – Guests can design and personalize their own “Grinchmas” ornaments to help decorate the venue’s other “Grinchmas” trees or take them home as a keepsake.

· Who-bilicious Cookie Dec-Who-rating – Freshly baked, ginger bread cookies will be available for purchase, and guests can create their very own amazing treats with an assortment of delectable frostings and tasty toppers.

· Story Time with Cindy Lou Who – Cindy Lou Who and her Who friends will gather guests of all ages – tall and small—for an engaging storytelling show of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, featuring special effects and audience participation.

Aboard the world-famous behind-the-scenes Studio Tour, fans of the blockbuster film, “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” will have the chance to enjoy a close-up view of the original Whoville film sets and a one-of-a-kind performance by unforgettable Whoville Whos re-enacting popular scenes and songs from the family favorite.

#CharlieB especially loved the cookie decorating station where she attempted to decorate a gingerbread man — instead she just ate all of the candy.

#CharlieB loved decorating her gingerbread man ... well, she loved eating the candy!

But, the absolute highlight of the night was meeting Cindy Lou!

#CharlieB got to meet Cindy Lou!

#CharlieB and #CindyLou!

“Grinchmas” runs weekends on December 6-7 and 13-14, then continues daily from Friday, December 19, 2014 through Saturday, January 3. It’s included in the price of admission for guests who visit Universal Studios Hollywood, plus if you buy a one-day general admission ticket, you get 2015 free … that’s a win-win my friends!

Product Review: Is The Poli Sippy Cup Perfect For Your Little One?

Have you ever taken note of how many sippy cups there are on the market? It feels like a trillion! But every so often, you stumble across one that is a bit different than the rest. Let me introduce you to the Poli sippy cup!

I’m sure you’re saying, ‘what makes this one so different?’ Well, let me tell you … it’s all about the “easy to clean/no parts to lose” design. This is the only cup we own that doesn’t require disassembly in order to wash and that is a God send!

While Charlie B. tried out the cup for a few days, I took notes and can give you my honest feedback. There were lots of pros, but just one con.

PROS
1. Did I mention the “easy to clean/no parts to lose” design! I’m always looking for ways to simplify life and this helps. It’s super easy to get in and wash those small/tight spots and you don’t have to worry about losing a tiny piece down the drain.

2. It’s practically spill-proof. Even with Charlie B. turning, twisting and tipping the cups there was very little spillage.

3. It’s made in the USA…LOVE that 🙂 Plus, it’s BPA and phthalate free AND created by a mom just like us!

CONS
1. Only one con for us and that was the flow. While it was easy for Charlie B. to get liquid from the cup, it wasn’t always enough to satisfy her and at times she got a bit frustrated. Since the cup is for 8 months and older, and Charlie B. is 18 months, I believe she may be just a little advanced for the flow level.

Note: The spout is an ergonomic design that is made of a harder material that is resistant to chewing and bite marks. While for parents it’s a pro, some little ones may not like it and consider it a con.

Here’s a couple of pic of Charlie B. and her Poli sippy cup! She has the “Twinkle, Twinkle” design, but they also come in “Hey Diddle, Diddle” and “Humpty Dumpty”, plus they were all hand drawn and colored by the mother who created the cup.  Find out more about Poli sippy cups on their website www.usapoli.com.

Guest Post: 5 Ways To Stay Healthy During The Hectic Holiday Season

Hey SASY Moms! I’m so happy to introduce you to Jewel Gould, founder of www.WhatAboutMommys.com. We connected on Instagram, but we’ve found that we have so much more in common than just cute pics on social media 🙂 Jewel is an amazing woman with an awesome story! Although she recently lost her mother to cancer, she’s turned tragedy into triumph with her magazine WhatAboutMommys.  WAM encourages moms to look and feel amazing by focusing on self esteem, health, fitness and fashion. This is why Jewel is the perfect person to give great tips on how to stay healthy during the hectic holiday season. So yes, we’ve all indulged during Thanksgiving, but my girl J is here to get us on track now, all the way through the New Year! ~ Modern Martha Stewart xo

Lovely mommies it’s the Holidays! Turkey, stuffing, lattes, shopping, and tons of desserts right?! But, besides all of the delicious Holiday treats, it’s also important that we don’t neglect our fitness goals and healthy lifestyles.

Because of the hustle and bustle, it’s much easier to keep nibbling on that pumpkin pie rather than cut up some fresh fruit. And let’s be honest, there’s just so many great foods that are delicious but, not necessarily nutritious at this time.

Instead of waiting until the New Year comes to “get back on track”. How about some tips and tricks that will assist you with keeping fit and focused during the “hectic Holiday season”.

1. Cook healthy meals.
If you cook healthy meals it will eliminate the need to buy food when you’re out shopping, etc. Because most times when we’re hungry, we reach for the unhealthy options. So plan your healthy meals ahead and cook, cook, cook!

2. Always incorporate a salad.
Salads are great for fiber, your skin, and to assist in giving you a great detox as well. So whether you have a salad for lunch, or include it as a side, eat as much salad as you can.

3. Don’t ditch your work outs!
This is a major one. During this time, because of our busy schedules, we tend to place our work out regimes on the back burner. But, even if you can’t make it to the gym, jog, walk, or put on a DVD. Whatever you do don’t skip your work outs.

4. Watch your portion sizes.
Stay away from the huge portion sizes. We are already “splurging” a little bit more, so be mindful of how much you eat at each meal.

5. Stress less.
Remember that above it all this is a time to truly enjoy your family, friends and loved ones. Don’t get too caught up on the material things. But truly embrace all that you have and get in a posture of thankfulness. This will help you to stress less. And remember stressed is desserts spelt backwards!

I hope that these little tricks and tips will help you to have a more relaxed, refreshed, happy and healthy holiday. Above it all remember to rock your smile, and commit to being fit.

Make sure you visit Jewel’s site What About Mommy’s and check her out on Twitter and Instagram @WhatAboutMommys.
